Accessibility Beyond Compliance

Many organizations view accessibility as a checkbox exercise, focusing solely on meeting minimum governmental requirements. But true accessibility is about creating environments that empower every individual, regardless of their abilities. Drawing from my experience at Microsoft and The Walt Disney Company, I’ve learned that accessibility is not just about following rules—it’s about creating inclusive spaces that work for everyone.

In industrial settings, accessibility goes far beyond wheelchair ramps and wide doorways. It’s about thoughtful design that considers diverse employee needs. This might mean adjustable workstations, clear visual and auditory communication systems, sensory-friendly break areas, and comprehensive accommodation processes that make every team member feel valued and supported.

The key is to view governmental requirements as a foundation, not a ceiling. By adopting this mindset, organizations can transform their industrial spaces from merely compliant to genuinely inclusive.
